Can we blame Lord Krishna for the calamity in Uttarakhand?

Human beings have a selfish nature, the more we receive from Mother Nature, the more we desire. This irrational greed was the basic cause of the disastrous flood. Unplanned development took place in Uttarakhand. Investors and contractors in Uttarakhand were imprudent. They overlooked the geographical structure of Uttrakhand. In an earthquake prone area it was a mere foolishness to have innumerable hotels, resorts, dharamshala, etc. The government of Uttarakhand is equally at fault for not implementing the environment laws.

How long can a mother withstand misdoings of her children? Thus Mother Nature or we can say Mother Earth reminded us that we have taken her for granted. She was burdened too much at the soils of Uttarakhand, thus she revolted, wreaking havoc and fury. Thousands of people are dead, many have become homeless. But it is a result of our wrong doings.

We can argue that the people who died were innocent pilgrims, why should they suffer? To this I have no clear scientific answer. Was it will of God or their own destiny? None can answer. Now we must take lesson from this horrific occurrence or we shall have to grieve again.

This is technical answer to the question why calamity happened in Uttarakhand.

Moving ahead if we look at the incident from the point of view of spirituality and specifically Hinduism we would come across many answers such as those mentioned below.

In Hindu mythology, we know that Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh are the creator, protector and destroyer of the world respectively. We can consider them as 3 different Gods or 1 God, as per our will. So the God who has the power to create us, protect us, has the power to destroy us too, we must bear that in mind.

Some people may claim that those who die at holy places are actually blessed and their souls receive benediction. To quote recent The Hindu article “Many believe the dead were blessed for they were called to the abode of Gods, or holy places, to breathe their last, glossing over the torment they must have experienced as their life withered away.” So we can look at the deaths of thousands of people as two sides of the same coin. Either it was a blessing or it was a curse.

Innocent children who died were at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Some people believe in cycle of life and death, unless you are free of all sins you shall be born again. Consequently due to bad ‘karma’ in previous births, these children were destined to die. This same logic can be applied to men and women too who died there.

Conclusion: We cannot blame Lord Krishna for the catastrophe in Uttarakhand.
